We stopped at the Nautilus Diner on our way south without looking at reviews. It was a stab in the dark and diners are generally good food and often a great find. This was just so so.
The service was very good and the staff was nice. The food was ordinary. My favorite thing to look for at diners is homemade corned beef hash and great coffee. I’m not sure if it’s the water or the brand of coffee, but this coffee had an aftertaste I didn’t like at all. As far as the hash, they only had canned hash. So that was a no. I ordered eggs over medium, fried potatoes and sausage. The sausage was definitely not your standard store bought….it reminded me of a German style pork sausage and very tasty and the eggs were a perfect over medium (runny yolks and cook whites).
I’m from New England where they know how to do fried potatoes (we call them homefries). These potatoes would not make the cut in any of the New England states. Even with a little green peppers in them (and there were very little), they were the blandest potatoes I’ve ever had…didn’t think you could make them that bland. I swear they were canned potatoes. The toast options were pretty standard too…white, wheat and rye. The wheat toast was the cheapest brand they could get from the delivery truck, so if you’re looking for artisan bread or something akin to fresh made, you won’t find that here.
My wife had the biscuits and gravy. While the biscuits did not taste homemade, she said the sausage gravy made up for that and was very good. It was very tasty and this is one of her favorite dishes.
So all in all, I gave this stop 3 stars. For a blind stop, it fed the hungries, but I would not go out of my way to find it again. Just my opinion.
